Differences between Wagepoint’s time management options

Wagepoint offers two ways to track employee hours: built-in Timesheets and Time by Wagepoint. Both options help you capture hours and bring them into payroll, but they’re designed for different types of businesses and time tracking needs.

This article explains the key differences so you can choose the option that works best for your team.

Before you start

Before choosing a time management option, consider:

• How your team records time (entering total hours vs. clocking in and out)
• Whether you need scheduling or location-based tracking
• If your business operates from one location or multiple job sites
• Whether simple time management or advanced workforce management tools are required

Option 1: Built-in Timesheets

Timesheets is Wagepoint’s hour entry feature. Built directly into Wagepoint, it lets approved time entries flow straight into payroll for quick, easy processing. Timesheets is a great fit for small businesses with simple time management needs that want an easy-to-use system without paying for another tool. Timesheets is included in both the Solo and Unlimited plans at no extra cost. Learn more about how it works in the Timesheets guide.

What you can do with Timesheets

Enter hours in the My Wagepoint mobile app
Employees and contractors can submit their hours directly through the My Wagepoint mobile app, available on iOS and Android or on the online employee portal.

Admins can also enter time for employees in Wagepoint.

Send approved hours into payroll automatically
Once hours are approved, they flow directly into your pay run. This helps reduce manual entry and keeps payroll accurate.

Calculate overtime automatically
Timesheets automatically calculate overtime based on Canadian provincial and territorial labour rules, helping you stay compliant without doing the math yourself.

Track timesheet status before payroll
You can quickly see whether a timesheet is completed or missing before running payroll. This helps ensure you’ve received all hours before processing pay.

Best for

• Small businesses with simple hourly tracking
• Teams that enter total hours instead of clocking in and out
• Businesses that want hours captured directly inside payroll

Option 2: Time by Wagepoint (add-on)

Time by Wagepoint is a separate premium time and attendance tool that integrates with Wagepoint payroll. It includes more advanced workforce management features for businesses that need more control over scheduling, locations, and job tracking.

Pricing for Time by Wagepoint starts at $20/month. More information can be found at our Time by Wagepoint knowledge base.

What you can do with Time by Wagepoint

Clock in and out with Time Clock mode
Employees can clock in and clock out rather than entering total hours. This creates more precise records of when shifts begin and end.

Use geofencing and GPS tracking
You can restrict clock-ins to specific job sites using geofencing or capture GPS coordinates when employees clock in. This helps confirm where work was performed.

Create and manage schedules
Managers can build and publish shift schedules and track paid time off (PTO) or unavailable time.

Set up kiosk mode
Kiosk mode allows a shared device, such as an iPad or tablet, to act as a central clock-in station for your team.

Best for

• Businesses with multiple locations or job sites
• Teams that need shift scheduling
• Companies that want employees to clock in and out
• Businesses that need GPS tracking or geofencing

Which option should you choose?

Choose Timesheets if you want a simple way to collect hours and run payroll without additional tools.

Choose Time by Wagepoint if you need advanced time and attendance features such as scheduling, GPS tracking, or shift-based workflows.

The right choice depends on how your team works and the level of time tracking detail you need.
